ciao a tutti.
Thanks to James Doweling excellent research and his awesome post on timezone about this situation of why so few Bakelite bezels survived on GMT's to this day.
I will take this service bulletin and after repair Rolex service card as to why so many owners changed from a Bakelite bezel to a metal bezel on early 6542's.
Now if you were a 6542 owner, would you risk radiation at that time in the 1950's or visit your Rolex dealer and have your bezel converted to the all safe metal bezel.
So Andrew that is way most of all my and other 6542's current owners such as yourself have metal bezels instead of the Bakelite bezel on every 6542. The Radioactive Bakelite bezels mostly went back to Rolex service and were destroyed.
My Bakelite bezel #s still glows in the dark.
The 6542 seemed to be a headache for Rolex in that time period as far as component failure. From brittle red and black date wheels, to the bezel radiation scare of the early 6542's. It is a miracle that Rolex sold so many 6542's. It did sound like Rolex could have just stop 6542 production at any minute to avoid a retroactive contamination lawsuit. Also the Baklite was prone to cracking and falling out of the bezel on a hard impact. Very delicate material Bakelite was at that time.
